Session Title: Taxation for Foreign Nationals

Session Speaker: Christy Vinolia Eban Parthiban, MBA, Enrolled Agent

Session Description:

Tax professionals come across several clients who are foreign nationals and who moved into the US as their future home. From the time they enter until the time that they choose to leave, there are several tax compliances that have to be met with the IRS and the US Treasury. I will be covering the specifics of dealing with clients right from choosing their residency, getting ITINs, FBAR, FATCA obligations, PFIC rules, elections available for foreign nationals, foreign tax credits and streamline procedures for non-compliant taxpayers.

Learning will entail getting a good understanding of how to approach clients who are in the US on a visa, how to capture foreign income, select the right elections, filing the right forms, and capturing all income / deductions for filing.

Webinars

Chapter Leaders: Did you know that pre-recorded webinars can be used by chapters for CPE credit?

How?

  1. First select a webinar from the library.
  2. Identify a facilitator for the program.
  • In a live session, the facilitator introduces the topic, coordinates the discussion after the webinar’s conclusion, and facilitates any polling questions or other form of audience participation throughout the webinar.
  • In a virtual session, the facilitator interrupts the webinar 3 times to obtain input from attendees to ensure they are still engaged. Input can be in the form of polling questions or entering a response in the chat feature. For instance, at the onset, participants can be given 3 words, then throughout the session, asked to enter the 1st, 2nd, then 3rd key word into the chat feature.
  1. Verify that all attendees participated in all polls or chat entries and attended for the full webinar time (ex. 50 minutes minimum for a 1 CPE credit webinar.
  2. Adhere to all other CPE request requirements included in the checklist.
