Session Title: Key Considerations for International Clients: An Extensive Guide

Session Speaker: Christy Vinolia Eban Parthiban

1 CPE / Finance / Basic

PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION:

When clients move to the U.S. from another country or relocate abroad, they face the challenge of managing additional tax jurisdictions, beyond just U.S. tax filings. It is essential to understand the various factors we need to address with clients to ensure accurate tax filings and avoid non-compliance. Many international tax forms carry significant penalties, which makes it critical for CPAs to maintain a comprehensive international checklist for such clients, preventing future issues on both sides of the border.

This program will explore the key tax reporting requirements for both inbound and outbound clients, including U.S. residency, FBAR, FATCA obligations, PFIC rules, elections, foreign tax credits, gifting, foreign trusts, Form 5471, and streamlined procedures for non-compliant taxpayers.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the presentation, you will get a good understanding of how to interview a client that comes with income across borders and how to file these forms.

PRESENTER BIOGRAPHY:

Christy is an Enrolled Agent, MBA (Finance) with 14 years of tax experience and industry experience of about 19 years. I am also awaiting my CPA licensure. I have been in various positions managing teams and handling tax clients who needed to meet their tax compliances. 90% of the clients that I’ve handled have foreign income that need US tax reporting. I’ve advised them on foreign income reporting, tax compliances needed, information returns reporting, remittance rules, overseas property sale / purchase consulting, gift and estate implications etc. Countries that I’ve advised clients for US tax filing includes UK, India, and few other countries. I also help with strategic planning, business structuring etc. to minimize tax implications. My last role included handling high net worth individuals with strategic planning and filing. I’ve also advised several clients who have defaulted filing their foreign information forms like FBAR, FATCA and who missed reporting their foreign income, to get back into compliance through streamline filing procedures.

Session Title: Beyond the Balance Sheet: Navigating Your Accounting Career with Confidence

Session Speaker: Pam Matula

Company: Intentional Butterfly Coaching LLC

1CPE/Personal Development/Basic

PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION:

Speaking about lessons learned in my 30-year accounting career (including over 8 years at Enron); primarily about how being an introvert, along with a high achiever and perfectionist, not only created issues with speaking up for myself, but also how I didn’t really know the best way to succeed without taking on a lot of additional work. I plan to touch on imposter syndrome, setting the right goals, and how confidence is built by saying yes to the right projects.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Becoming more confident to go after the goals, projects, roles that you want
  • Understanding how building confidence is linked to improved mental health
  • Recognizing the signs that you are misaligned with your values/ burnout
  • Understanding that we are not alone in our fears or insecurities.  They are universal.

PRESENTER BIOGRAPHY:

Pam is a Certified Mindset and Performance Coach, and the founder of Intentional Butterfly Coaching.  She was an accountant and CPA for nearly 30 years before starting her own coaching business.  Pam has a foundation in life coaching and is now turning her focus to accountants who are learning to navigate their growing career alongside their personal lives.

Webinars

Chapter Leaders: Did you know that pre-recorded webinars can be used by chapters for CPE credit?

How?

  1. First select a webinar from the library.
  2. Identify a facilitator for the program.
    • In a live session, the facilitator introduces the topic, coordinates the discussion after the webinar’s conclusion, and facilitates any polling questions or other form of audience participation throughout the webinar.
    • In a virtual session, the facilitator interrupts the webinar 3 times to obtain input from attendees to ensure they are still engaged. Input can be in the form of polling questions or entering a response in the chat feature. For instance, at the onset, participants can be given 3 words, then throughout the session, asked to enter the 1st, 2nd, then 3rd key word into the chat feature.
  3. Verify that all attendees participated in all polls or chat entries and attended for the full webinar time (ex. 50 minutes minimum for a 1 CPE credit webinar.
  4. Adhere to all other CPE request requirements included in the checklist.
